Hey all out there,
I have just accepted a new job in Dubai and looking for advice/tips/new friends(!). I am starting a new job in the Media City and was wondering about the social life out there? Also, unusually for a chick, I am a massive football fan - am I being stupid by asking whether you get any Premier League games out there?
Thanks all bx
fayz
don't worry men outnumber women in the 25-40 category by 4 to 1 you'll make lots of friends ;) also many pubs show a bit of footie including the Premier League.
Which is your team?
Welcome and enjoy your stay.

fayz really ? I dunno why i always feel like there are more women than men , like when you go out and stuff ..
but it might be that i am just on the lookout for them :P .. plus my buisness trips to saudi might be messing me up haha
airyfairy

Yeah I read that in one of the papers a while back but it does factor in all the laborers and excludes all the women who are on "visit" visas. So on a regular night out the ratio is a lot better.
Having said that though I gots to hang out with you, I like your vision.

So guys, tell me about the social scene. I have seen from the other posts that there is a "lively" social scene - but there also seems to be alot of people that are finding it hard to meet people. I'm coming out a few days before I start work and was hoping to go out somewhere to hang out (!!) and meet people - any recommendations?
Also, is this the right place to find out about yoga and pilates in Dubai?

Welcome.
The social scene depends on a lot of things but i would say each one has different experiences in dubai. When you come you will see
yoga and pilates probably best to check the sports/recreation clubs they usually hold such classes.
Cheers,
D

A bit of healthy rivalry never hurt anyone. Loser can buy the drinks (personally, you have got the better deal because my team 'aint doing so well this season).
D, thanks for the message re yoga and pilates - will look out for them.

can anyone give advice re mobile phones - would I be able to get a pay as you go type package while I am getting my banking sorted? How much would these be?
all tips/advice welcome
thanks
Louloute
Yup... I can pass you on the same info someone from the forum passed me on when I got here
You can get a pay as you go SIM card here for AED 160. If you have a fone already that is open to operators abroad, that'll work. Otherwise, you'll get a relatively basic but good Nokia here from about AED 180. All you need to get the SIM is your passport. Its really easy. Just go to an ETISALAT outlet and you'll get it there.
Hope that helps? 8)
