Hi Again
Yet another plea for assistance I'm afraid:-
I'm coming over next week for a couple of weeks to set everything up for my more permanent move.
Any guidance on setting up a mobile phone contract over there please, bearing in mind I will not have any residence details yet, or a local bank account?
Also is it the same as UK - as in do you get a phone included in the contract, or is it better to buy a sim free phone here in UK and obtain a UAE sim card???
Thanks again

Not the same in the UK but just as simple.
You can just buy a pay-as-you-go sim when you have a resident card or UAE driving licence with Etisalat - I just used my UAE licence when I got here. You can get a temporarily UAE licence by just converting your UK licence before you get a residents permit meaning you don't have to spend loads on rental cars either.
With the secondary supplier DU I have heard from people at work you need a photo copy of your residence permit, passport and a salary certificate letter for some reason. Not worth the hastle!
Welcome to Dubai soon!

You can get a wasel sim package from Etisalat by just providing a copy of your passport and visit visa. You can do this at many locations including any petrol station.
Once you get your residence visa you can then switch this to a GSM line / postpaid contract to get billed monthly and keep the same number.
Cheers,
D
P.S. if you only need a line for 90days you can get the Ahlan package from the Etisalat counter at the airport itself or at any Cellucom outlet in the city. This is like a "tourist" package
