FKQ
Hi everyone.
I am new to this forum and would like to take this oppertunity to say hello to everyone. I have been looking through the forum for a number of weeks and find it very interesting.
I was hoping if someone can through some light on my offer. The offer has been made and I am now waiting to receive the contract.
I am in the legal profession. I am married and have two boys 14 & 11. My wife is a teacher here in the UK but does not want to teach in Dubai. She may look for something different.
The offer is as follows:
Salary US$124000 per annum plus bonuses.
Benifits included are separate from the above salary:
Rent US$3500-4000 per month
Medical for the family
Insurance for the family
All utility bills to be paid by the company
Travel- although they will pay for taxis I understand a car is a must. Should I ask for it?
Childrens Education to be subsidised (2 boys aged 14 & 11)
Relocation costs to be discussed
Air Fares home to be discussed
I visited Dubai a couple of years ago and liked it very much.
Can anyone suggest what they think about this package and anything else I should ask for from the company.
Many thanks in advance.
FKQ.
PS please move this post as you see fit to another forum as I was unsure where to post it.

this looks like a good offer .. however i have a clarification on the rent. Are they providing you with accommodation ? or they are giving you cash and you have to get your own ? depends on what you are looking to live in you might have to negotiate a bit more on the rent allowance.
FKQ
Hi Maaad,
Many thanks for your reply.
To be honest when I spoke to the company GM he said that they would pay the rent and setup costs and suggested that a villa is usually available in the range of $3.5k to $4k per month as other eople were paying about the same amount. However, I understand that the rents have increased quite a lot recently. How much would you suggest is a more realistic figure?
Is it realistic to use taxis on a daily basis or is a car a must?
Thanks,
FKQ

Welcome!
You will love it here. I am attorney myself, mainly construction arbitration plus other areas of practice but in my late 20s. Offer sounds okay btw.
May I ask which firm in the UK you used to be with?
Good Luck :)

Hi Omar,
Actually I am based in Islamabad. My family are based in the UK as my sons are at school there. I am not actually working with any UK firm. My home company is relocating me. I am presently working on an arbitration involving the home government.
How long have you been in Dubai? It seems you obviously enjoy it there. Is there much arbitration work over there? I will still be heavily involved in Islamabad but also have a base in Dubai. I will see how things go and if all seems ok will move my family over.

FKQ

Hi FKQ,
I too have been relocated to Dubai; for the past 4 years, I have been based in Cairo (my hometown) at the headquarters of our Firm and have just recently been transfered to our Dubai branch office (since 94).
I've been here for 3 months now and I'm really enjoying my stay (where to live is key in that regard so choose well and think long term).
There's plenty of arbitration work as far as I can tell since I got here (just got a new case last week) but institutional support is not so great.
I imagine you're a fellow colleague of the Civil Law (Pakistan)?
Best of luck,
Omar

Hi Omar,
Yes I am a member of the Pakistan High Court Bar.
Institutional support for arbitration is not so good here either but it beats the domestic courts any day.
I understand that you are based in Mirdif. How do you find it? Is it a long way away from your office and do you manage to avoid the rush hour traffic?
Do you think a housing allowance of about AED155000 per annum to be sufficient or should I ask for more and what areas do you suggest for living?
Lastly, would you advise in favour of my having a car or are taxis sufficient.
Best regards,
FKQ.

Yes, I live in a really nice compound called Uptown Mirdif and it takes me 20 minutes in the morning to get to work on Zayed Rd (the API Tower next to the Fairmont) and 30 minutes in the afternoon on my way back.
Concerning your accommodation allowance, I know that AED130K gets you a really nice two bedroom in Uptown but if your place of work is in Jebel Ali for instance then Barsha is the way to go. So it depends on where you work but in general I think AED155K is pretty good.
Finally, forget about Taxis and start negotiating transportation allowance with your prospective employer (if they offered to pay for Taxis then they must've have budgeted at least AED3000 for that).
Keep us posted

Hi Omar,
Many thanks for your advice. I will keep you posted as to any developments and hope we can meet up sometime once I am in Dubai.
