Hello, this is my first ever post, oh Im a little nervous, I have been watching for a few weeks, this seems to be such a great site to learn about Dubai. I have been lead off on many different tangents and learnt many interesting facts, (some more so than others). My husband Russ, son, Loch and I are hoping to move to Dubai mid next year with Russ' work, we are from Australia.
All the information on the site it fabulous, very good for a slightly anxious (long way from Aus!)wife and mother, to get all sorts of relevant information and such about a new and exciting adventure.

Help, my lady and I are swithering about job offers we have to join a local company in Dubai, we both work in the same field. We are offered company provided accomodation in a 'compound', all utilities paid, company cars as we need to be both mobile, cellnet phones and 30 days re-pat leave with return airticket plus our salary (s).
1. Is this a good deal, standard or deluxe, how much salary should we expect given the offer we have, (presently we both earn £50K ish here in UK), been offered 2 years or 5 years contracts.
2. Although based in Dubai likely we will need to travel around the middle east on behalf of prospective employer, do we need visas to get into other countries, Iran, Qatar, Oman etc
3. Medical insurance, dental insurance, and travel insurance.....is it usual to expect employer to pay this.
4. We have to bring three dogs, spaniels, with us. What do we need to know for the dogs wellbeing in Dubai.
5. What is a 'compound', (didn't want to seem stupid at the interview and ask)
6. Need to play rugby, she needs to water ski......easy to do or what.
7. Having visited Dubai earlier in the year, which part of the city do most brit/euro ex-pats live in and what are the costs like.
8. My lady slightly nervy about going on her own to business appointments etc.......Do local business men object to european women calling to present/discuss technical issues (construction industry). Would site visits be a problem for her.
9. Is it better to open accounts with local, UAE, banks and then get transfers back to UK for mortgage etc or open international accounts with existing UK bankers.
10. Are we paranoid or should we just get on the plane.
Hope you all have a good new year and thanks to all for reading and helping where they can.
Look you up when we get there, ( if we do! )
Pikey & Pixy
salsa
Both of you are paranoid.
Anyway let me give my comments on some of the points raised by you. But, first of all let me tell you that here in Dubai and UAE there are two kinds of expats - British and other european form one class and Indians and other asians the other class of expats.
Brits and europeans are supposed to get all health insurance coverage by the companies.
There is no problem in women going out to construction sites and having tech meetings. She can take up sking and you can play rugby. Both of you will need to take up membership of the respective clubs.
Here in Dubai the Brits and eurpeans are treated differently as far as enteries to clubs and pubs are concerned. Typically a club allows enteries to an european or arab even if he is entering it alone where as an Indian entering might not be allowed unless they are as couple or else they would have to pay an unreasonable entry charges.
What it means is that the Brits and europeans form the upper class here and you should not have much concern moving here as long as you get paid better and it helps you to have some very good savings.
Cheers!!!!

Reminded me of Mohammed Ali's biography where he enters an all-white bar and gets kicked out even after he won olympic medal for states. Rascist fools! Chinese and Indians will rule the world 2morrow and these sick fools will be riding camels or worse donkey.

Yay !!!!!!!! Another Canadian. By the time I reach the shores of Dubai , there must be enuf Canadians to greet me. Our population MUST exceed that of the Brits. Let's show our talent to the Guld and rip em off! Atleast we are ripping em of legally!

Sniper makes complete sense, there is going to be a time when India and china will lead the world economy. There has to be a reason behind all the IT majors investing big time in India, and look at the way china is catching up in trade and commerce.
People having racist attitude will always have it ,no matter what or how much sense you try to put in their heads its not going to help. Deep down they have false sense of superiority but that is built on the blocks of hate .
I been reading all these posts over last few days and ignoring them just as a passing comment, but i guess someone has to speak out somewhere, sometime.
Salsa, i think people who discriminate on skin color are fools, try and compare the intelligence and you would see that Indians would beat Brits and europeans hands down.Agreed not all dark skinned people have the previlage of being educated but those who do are far more superior than so called superior expats according to you.
By saying the above i am not trying to hurt anyones sentiments, i know there are good white skinned people out there as well. this is directed to people who are racists at heart.

Behemoth or Bephemot is also a god from an ancient religion (became satan in Christianity because he was illustrated as having the head of a goat, the body of a man, the legs of a deer, and the wings of a bat) and what the vatican named Mohammed (PBUH).

Hi,
I'm Puppy but I like kittens and bunnies better. Some already know me and the reason why I joined the forum. I met some men from the Emirates as well as Arabs from other nations who aren't exposed to a variety of people and make dumb claims about people's looks or they just need to see an optician, ophthamologist, or optomitrist. You can look at my posting history to find out the horror. Well if it is just an eyesight problem, I encourage the Emirates to bring in opticians, ophthamologists, or optomitrist. The illness may spread to the ex-pats.
Anyway I'd like to go to the Arab world soon. Dubai and Abu Dabi (spelling?) sound and look fascinating. I don't think I would want to live there because I have 20/15 vision and may feel out of place. ANyway I'd love to visit for 3 weeks but I"m not rich so I don't know where I would stay.
Also read there are Khazaks. Does that mean there is a Khazak restaurant in Dubai? I LOVE Afghani food. I wonder if it's similar. I missed out on a Uyghur restaurant the last time I was in Montreal.
Okay have to go home now. Later

Hello UAE and Dubai ! Looking forward to moving there with my husband. We should be landing there around September. He is there now training with his job and I am awaiting employment or his sponsorship whichever comes first. We are looking for expat friends to meet, have dinner with, possibly boat with. we definitely want to buy a boat there. We are looking for a villa to either rent or buy and want to make some investments. We're not rich but we hope to definitely take advantage of the tax free income and use it wisely. I hope we can become friends with alot of you. We love to travel, boat, do things with other couples. We are empty nested ( last one at home left for college 2 days ago) and now its our turn to enjoy life :)
