Magnolia
Hello all.
I recently took an offer from Dubai. Will be coming here on June 1st.
So I was doing some dubai research before accepting this job and one of my friends introduced this forum to me. Cool site. New posts and replies every day. And you guys look very friendly. Although some of the posts received strong sarcasm.
Since I am coming in June, is it the hottest season to come? Do people avaid going out in the day? Are people here okay with girls wearing tube top or mini skirt? Sorry for sounds like a peasant. Being a terrible fashion victim, what clothes to bring is on the top of my list.
This post is getting to long. My last two question:
Back in Shanghai, we have international dj coming in town every week and after parties of all kinds of fashion shows from time to time. How is the clubbing scene in Dubai? Is it relatively less active because of the religion here? Futher question, any one in this site like house, trance, techno? Would love to make friends and hang out together.
(Alright, I swear, last question) How is the Asian/asian looking population here? Do you get to see Chinese/hknese/taiwanese, Koreans, Japanese, Singaporeans alot in Dubai? Hope I dont sound like a narrow minded racist who just want to hang out with her own racial. I m asking because if there is a number of asians then there should be some good asian restaurants that I can have my home country food. :-)
It is a big decision for me to come to dubai. Totally different culture and climate. I am coming from Shanghai. Just curious, has anyone here ever been to Shanghai? I was told that Dubai and Shanghai were similar in some aspects. Both grow fast. Both have a good combination of modern and tradition. But dubai is more modernized and well-organized while Shanghai is much much larger in terms of size and population.
I hope I can get used to living in Dubai soon. And last but not the least, make a lot of friends!

No, they go out, but to closed air conditioned places. you also will avoid going out when it is 50 C in shade ;)

Well, not every week but every month we have alot of gigs around, last week there was faithless and we have paul van dike comming soon.
Fashion shows... well i don't know aobut that.
Clubbing here is AMAZING, i was in china, and here is much better to tell you.
Don't let religion worry you, if you are not into it, it will not affect you except if you are planning to do something you can't do in china, the states or europe (Legally i mean)
Well, around the forum there are alot of party fanatics, i refer you to Chocoholic "our official party info system" also we all are party goers, depends on which parties, some go to concerts, some go to high end clubs, some go to more hip clubs, or bars... you will know them

Thought it would be very humid
Magnolia
Yshimy, thank you so much for your detailed reply. I guess I am lucky to post this thread on the day that you are off from work. I really appreciate your help.
PVD is coming to Dubai? Nice. He was in Shanghai for the smirnoff party last Dec. My birthday was on the same day. It felt great, as if all the people in the stadium were there to celebrate my bday. :-D
Where is this

Is that you in the avatar? We'll have to get Wafaey and uaeaussie over to this thread, because they are big fans of people posting their own pics in the avatar.

Thanks for the advice. What's the name of those markets? Maybe they have some certain indigrent that we chinese need to cook a big chinese dinner?
It's okay for me that dubai is not big in terms of size, as I will be flying out of it in a high frequency. Also, if it's not that big, does it also mean that the community is relatively small and expats know each other?
I think I will keep myself busy with all sorts of things. Plan multiple? Yes. Of course!
There is just something about Shanghai that might be a bit different to what people from outside of China have imagined of. It's quite modernized. A big metropolis. Life styles of the residence there are very much influenced by the western world. What you see in the China Town abroad may not fully reflect what Shanghai is like. :D

Hey constantine. Really so many wellknown djs went to SGP? Fab. I havent been to that place before. For some reason, I had always thought that singaporeans were very displined and never went out of line. Maybe I was wrong.
Tiesto has his asia tour in DKD of Shanghai this coming Saturday. Yahhhh!
Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely check out the dragon mart after I arrive!
Hope you will visit Shanghai soon. Let me know if you need some advice on where to go. Would love to do that.
With its own vibe... Great to hear that. I like cities that have their own characters. Really looking forward to it!

Hello Magnolia, I am a Singaporean here in Dubai.
The chinese asian community is not very big here. That said, I believed the Chinese from China is the biggest Asian Chinese population here in DUbai. Trade with China has been flourishing. There is even a Dragon Mart here where you can find all Made in China products. From shoes to even motocycles.
As for a good Chinese meal, there are places you can go to. What's more, the taste is very much like those from China, as they are mainly run by Chinese people from China.
The entertainment scene on the other hand, can be tricky here. Only hotels and country clubs serve liquor. As such, there are only so many places you can go. Also, if you are a Chinese lady, you might want to avoid centain bars as they are mainly filled with working girls.
If you are coming in June, you can contact me for more info.
Cheers.

I am busy packing and shopping in Shanghai at the moment. As time goes by, I am more and more worry-free. Even if I forget to bring things that are not so easy to find here, I could still have my family DHLed them to me, couldnt I? Might need to figure out how the policies and restrictions are like.
In Shanghai, although it's quite big, when it comes to places to go at night, even there are a lot of choices out there, we always end up in certain places. Sometimes it gets boring if you go to one place too many times or too frequently. However you also feel comfortable going to the places that you are familiar with.
As for places to avoid, I definitely will need your further advice on that. Regardless of how I look or where I am from, it's always wise not to go to those girlie bars. And of course, I get your point why being a Chinese I might need to be more careful.

Thanks in advance,

Fayz,
There are a few good places for Chinese food out of a handful in Dubai but the one that really stands out is Lam Kwai Fong (behind Lamsy Plaza, Oud Metha). The chef's Honkee.
Ohh... I'm looking for a decent place for dim sum too. I hear the Chinese restaurant in Shangri La serves that pallet. And I just found out yesterday that there's a small selection at Kempinski Hotel (at the foot of the ski slope).
Let's talk food :)
