Hello there! Hoping to relocate from the US-

LBHOO Hello All- I am new to the forum and have found it to be quite useful in getting a feel for life in Dubai as well as answering questions relating to the cost of living and the job search. I do have a question. I am looking for a position in marketing and business development and have worked for six years in New York marketing to all of North America for mostly European and Middle Eastern clients. As far as employment is concerned, is there any advantage to me being American as opposed to being European? Or is it a disadvantage? Or neutral? I’m just starting the job search and do see job postings that specify European, South African, Australian, but not American. Is this just because there are more Europeans generally? Thanks for your thoughts!
arniegang Welcome alexandra Welcome to DF for our american guest (and btw hope u wont claim to have some advantages based on ur nationality as here is a crazy mix of cosmopolit spirits) hope to see u arround! Liban Welcome. MaaaD Welcome, and i would say the majority of "western" expats are from Europe. However there is a growing canadian community. There are Americans, but they are a minorty among expats because Dubai is not really as famous in the US as it is in Europe. Although the DP World issue did bring in some light on dubai. Good luck !! the_zooter I think a fair few Americans (mainly the ones in the middle of the US!) probably think that because Dubai is in the Middle East and also because it is a Muslim country, it is therefore a terrorist country and they imagine it to be very unsafe indeed. I actually speak from experience. My sister-in-law is from Iowa (in the middle of the US). She is very clever (she has 2 degrees!), but when I told her I wanted to relocate to Dubai, she was concerned for my welfare as it was just outside Baghdad!! She assumed it was very unsafe and there would be bombings left right and centre!! So I dare say thats a reason there aren't many US citizens in Dubai. To answer another of your points, I think when they refer to wanting a European in job adverts, they mean a westerner, who is English speaking and probably white/caucasion. A64Venice If you think about it, globally there is a preconceived belief about Muslim countries being unsafe that is applied to all countries in that group. I think the reason why people leave their countries has more to do with finding the right opportunities. It doesnt have much to do with politics. Atleast, thats what I believe, I could be wrong. LBHOO Hi All- Thanks for your welcome. I hope to see you all around Dubai soon! Concord Welcome. Dubai is ok - Big Apple it aint. Fuggedbouit! $G$ Hey man, I'm an American. Don't worry about Dubai. It's basically an American city.

Nah... Its more British than anything else... Everything AD side of Bur Dubai that is :) d3vilish_ang3l_88 heloo..hop ull have fun here !! :) $G$
AD side???
Dubai's nothing like a British city. It's nothing like Machester, Birgham, Brisstol, London or whatever... Liban Its nothing like a ghetto ridden US city.... Have you stopped to look around you man? Dubai is a city developped for Brits and populated by Indians. Nothing remotly American at all about it. $G$
I wasn't talking about the people. I was talking about the city itself.
Have you ever been to NYC? Dubai is NYC Jr., nothing like a Brit city.
Brit cities have many double deckers, lots of greenery, tiny cars, narrow roads, small shops, small malls, small buildings, small everything...
Plus, they drive on the other side of the road. DaveDXB I dont care anymore, Dubai aint moving, its always going to be here when i need it. UNLESS! looool..... Mr Burj-Al-American Idiot I am American and I lub the best city in the UAE! And there are direct flights twice daily now between NYC and DXB on probably the most successful Middle Eastern Airline ever. How does your airport manage to cram in all those aircraft? Believe me, Dubai is not shunned everywhere in the U.S. We love you guys more than you love us. (not a surprise) bflogan Hello, I hope you all find this link useful sniper420
i wanna make it Canadian...when I come I will bring with moi some really good canadian business moguls..... then we will have our share
mraph33 If your talking about the buildings, Dubai is more like Las Vegas than NYC. A city built on a sandbox, where the purpose of every building is to outdo the ones surrounding it.
But regarding the people, the behavior, the ethnicity - nothing like anywhere in the US.

Someone's been listening to too much Eminem Liban
I've been to the US many times. Seen Detroit, NYC, New Orleans, Chicago, Miami...
The inner core and the essence is quite ghetto... xibit welcome but u know i know a few ppl who think that dubai is a place with bearded camel riding pirates, who drink and bath in petrol and each person has 20 to 30 wives. its really sad and these ppl i know are all americans Nick81
Oh it's much much worse in some cases... When I told some ppl that I was from Lebanon, they asked me where I was from ORIGINALLY. I told them again that I was from Lebanon, as in born and raised there. They were like : "dude! Are you talking about Lebanon in Ohio or what?"
I seriously never knew there was a city called Lebanon in the US but I am pretty sure my ignorance is pretty negligable next to theirs... They literally choked on the fact that it actually snows in Lebanon, that we have a nightlife, that I don't use a camel to go to university and that we have access to the internet, satellite tv etc etc... xibit not to offend any one i think americans live in their own fantsy world that ameria is the best palce to live in rest all of the world is poor flea infested junk yard and that every one is jealous of america coz they are so successful they all are bigheaded, arrogant poeple who think that the world starts and ends in the states. btw i always thought that why is it only the Caucasians or whites to be more speciifc come to find jobs here in the middle east how come i dont see any american black or hispanics over here? Liban
Racism is alive and well in Dubai you know... Nick81
Everytime someone generalizes, a puppy is tortured somewhere in the world. raidah i remember meeting ppl there who thought paris was the capital of europe... oh and there was another thing. i spent in the usa 4 month during which i met all kinds of ppl: intellectuals, millionairs and simple ppl also. well, after a couple of weeks i made a habbit out of checking if i can find at least one person who could use the fork and the knife in a proper way...no luck whatsoever  it might sound ridiculous for some to pay attention to these kind of stuff, but i think its the minimum that u eat civilised (at least) in a public restaurant and not if as u just escaped from the jungle... Dubai Knight Don't start me off! There are quite a few American citizens living and working in the UAE, a large proportion of them in Abu Dhabi due to the oil industry, but there is a reasonable US Expat community here in Dubai...and I have a 'Septic' as a house mate! The Americans who fetch up here tend to be more outgoing and worldly wise and I can confirm that 99% of the population of the US thinks that the rest of the world is a small island off New York!   Knight mraph33
Knife - for stirring the ice in your drink
Fork - for scratching those hard to reach places
At least that what I was taught....
