HI All,
I am yet another employed Aussie relocating to Dubai. I like everyone else have a few questions that don't seem to be answered yet!
Basically I like to stay fit & am trying to work out how I do this in the heat.
1.As the "big hotels" appear to have "private beaches" is there a beach I can run for 5-10 Km's on, safely? (winter of course)
2. Are gyms the way to go?
3. Which is the best "beach club" to join?
4. Is there an Outrigging club? or just Kayak?
5. Do the Hotels have the monoploy on the beachfront sports or are there independant ones too?
6. Villa verses Appartment living.... is it just personal preference? or are the other benifits of Pool/Gym a draw on Appartment (if your into that sorta thing)
7. Is Dubai a sportyplace in the winter ?
Cheers
8. How do I maintain health & fitness without melting or beoming a Dugong laying on the beach.

Mate, u're talking as if there is actually a proper 'winter' here.

When you find out, please tell me. I'm scared of going to the beach in case Greenpeace start throwing buckets of water over me and calling for assistance.

There are a number of health clubs with all facilities, but they may run you around Dhs3500-4000 per year.
Most blocks of flats have pools and gym facilities, but they may be limited. As for the other stuff you asked about:
In Dubai, you only play sports in winter. Its just too damn hot to play in summer (unless in a/c enviroment)
There are a number of public beaches around, but not sure you could get 5-10Km on them (perhaps try SZR! hahahaha)

We still play basketball outside 4-5 times/week.....its kind of toasty, but nothing that a fw liters of water can't solve.
A lot of buldings have small gyms with really cr@ppy equipment. So if you really want to get a good workout, you need to join a health club - and there definately are a lot, with good equipment (Nautilus/Life Fitness/ etc. ).
For running, in Mamzar Beach, there is a really nice padded running track that goes all the way around the beach - I think its 5km. And yes....people are still running on it in July (just not at noon). If you want to run in the sand itself, you will find ample shoreline for that, not a 10 km stretch - but long enough that you wont feel like a rat in a shoebox running back and forth.

I've cut it down to 2-3 times a week now. Humidity is a killer on your lung's capacity.

Matey, u're alright in my books - my two fav things to do here.
In winter I was playing everyday after work. But now have got a couple of days a week in-door to go along with the outdoor pick up games followed by a dip in the pool at around 9pm when the water is nice and warm - very relaxing.

Hey Gyppo!!
I'm no expert at keeping fit but there are a fair few gyms and beach clubs. Also, get a copy of Time Out when you get here... it's an absolute bible!!
If you need a hand with the partying side of things, I'm your girl!!!!
