G'day from Oz

ShaunB Seems there's a few of us interested in Dubai. Anyway, I'm Shaun. An English guy based in Sydney right now but about to make the move with work. Will probably arrive the first week in May. So, hello all! Looking forward to an interesting time in Dubai!
easternjewel Hello & welcome :D arniegang Welcome comrade pommie GAB Yeah, but he will have had a bit of that Aussie charm rub off on to him while he's been there! :) Welcome. ShaunB Many thanks to all of you. See you all soon ShaunB Well, finally arrived. So, hello again everyone. This time actually from Dubai!! fayz well let me be the first to say..... Hot enough for you ??  ShaunB The heats fine so far, guess it'll get worse and then I'll start to suffer. I guess I got a little acclimatized in Sydney, if I was coming straight from the UK I would be dying by now. Not so sure how I'll cope when it gets to 50 though! Hide in the aircon I guess. My impressions so far are, nice city in the bits that are finished but will be a fantastic city when it's finished. Very friendy people also. One question, the price of beer, I went into a place yesterday just to have a rest and quick beer. The guy on the door offered to sell me tokens for 5 beers for 50 dirum and food. As i was only going in there for one, I said no, but then the one beer was 23 dirum and of course I had two! Is this a normal thing, i.e. buy the five beer tokens even if your only having a couple and have a bite to eat as well? Lived in a few countries now and there's always a few "quirks" you need to get to know, I guess this might be one of them sharewadi
No, most places sell drinks one at a time. Sounds like a Waxy's deal to me - they have a special like that on Fridays. But there are many different deals around the place. Free drinks for ladies on Tuesday nights, all you can eat and drink buffets, etc. ShaunB Your exactly right, it was Waxys and on Friday. Nice place but very busy, any recommendations for other decent pubs? I'm based in Bur Dubai until I find permanent accomodation

sharewadi Time Out Dubai (magazine and website) has a good listing of places to go. Quarterdeck is a pleasant place. Rock Bottom, Jimmy Dix, Waxy O'Connor are lively (or noisy and crowded and meat markets depending on your POV). Carter's and Sevilles are more relaxed. Bar Zar and Leftbank are cool. Red Lion and Victoria are typical (sort of) British Bars. There's plenty to go and explore 8)... Dubai Knight Double Decker at the new Murooj Rotana at Defense Roundabout is a typically British Pubby kind of place. Dark, dingy, smelling of spilled beer and full of dodgy geezers on their mobiles...yup: Typical!   Knight
