5 reasons to turn down that 'great' job offer... and why? Apr 13, 2014
Think through. Is the offer at hand the right one for you or should you turn it down if these warning signals creep somewhere before taking a final call?

Professionally unpromising

You may be fed up with your existing job and desperate to get another one but that doesn’t mean that you take up any opportunity that comes your way.

Can you foresee a lack of career path and growth in the new job that is offered to you? If there are even hints of it, do not accept the offer.

Bossy problems with the boss

Most people leave bosses not companies – we’ve known this ever since we joined the workforce. And, if you sense that your new boss could well live up to this age old belief, turn down the offer.

The boss in your current job could be nasty enough but it’s better to stay with a known devil than an unknown one.

Has the company taken too long to make the offer?

A company run by professionals is expected to take timely decisions. If there has been a huge gap from your first interview call to the final offer being made, think twice.

The company certainly has issues and this may happen in the future too. Project deadlines, increments, promotions and many other things will take longer than expected due to the lack of good decision making by the company officials.

This can also tell about the employer’s image of you. Were they really inclined to hire you in the first place or settled with you as a second or perhaps a third choice? If this is the case, you may suffer if you were not their first choice.

Is there something fishy?

Do you sense dishonesty in their dealings? This could be about your work profile that is changed constantly, discrepancies in your overall package or anything else that is offered to you. Stay away from such an office even if one of these things is true.

Pay package

We all work for money and if you believe what is offered is too less, then, this job may not be worth taking up. It may be best to explore other options and settle with one that rewards you in a fair way.

Too many people joining and leaving

Just as an employer looks for continuity in your CV, employees too want to work with a company where people have worked for a certain period of time.

If the employee turnover of the company is too high try to find out the reasons behind it. It may open up a can of worms.

How do they treat their employees?

During the course of the various rounds of interviews, you may get introduced to some people in the office or the team. Observe keenly how do the officials treat others working there. Is it with dignity or in a way to ridicule? If it’s anything close to the latter, we suggest don’t be a part of such an organisation.

If you sense your new employer guilty of any of these points, step back and think. The new job may not be worth leaving the one you already are in. In such a case stay put in your current one and go back to what you did previously – looking for another job.
