In a word NO, because Tattooing and body piercing is illegal in the UAE. There are some people that do stuff, but you can't guarantee their qualifications of hygiene.

See I always wondered about that, If you pick up the connector magazine there are tattoo parlors advertised. Then again Radar detectors are sold here but are illegal as well.

A friend of mine through word of mouth found a tattoo artist working out of her house, definitely was on the seedy side of Dubai (well as seedy as DXB gets) but if you’re interested send me a pm and I’ll pass on the contact information. I was in awe by her skill we chose a design, she free handed it on a piece of cardboard adjusting it for some verbal changes my friend asked for and then the next day came back, a couple hours in the chair it was done and amazing.

As Choco mentioned, hygiene would be a concern you would likely be better off going to a place advertised and at a studio.

Hey Fayz, You're right in that you do see these advertised in Connector, BUT this is cosmetic tattooing as opposed to body art, i.e. eye brows, lips etc and some beauticians are trained to do the cosmetic tattooing, which most of the time is not permanent anyway but lasts around 5 years.

I need the colours in my tattoo re-doing as they're certainly not as vibrant as they once were, but I'm very hesitant about getting anything done here, although a friend of mine has found an amazing guy and his work is incredible. I think I'll wait till I can get back to the UK and find a certified studio, as the tought of re-used needles and unssterile equipment totally freaks me out.

Remember peeps if you do go somewhere here then make sure you check all the equipment, a brand new needle should be used each time and the only way to sterilise equipment is in an autoclave, if anyone tells you any different then just don't do it.

Same actually goes for body piercing. I really hate it when you see belly bars and stuff on display and people have touched them and then you want to put that in your body? Think of all the germs! I only ever used to buy body jewellery from a nurse who was also a body piercing specialist, because all the jewellery was sealed in the original sterile packs. If it comes off a shelf in a shop, it's not clean and no amount of washing will make it clean.

Hello chocoholic & fayz,

thank you for your answers. I didn't know that tattooing and piercing is illegal in the UAE. This is one reason to refrain from it. The second reason is the addressed problem with the short of hygiene. I've no pleasure to come home sick because i got a tattoo in any "witches'kitchen" or come in jail because i did a "crime".
Thank you very much for your postreplys. I will get my tattoos in all the other towns in the world where it is allowed and hygienic safe.
Thank you and bye bye. :D

Hi everyone,

My name is Lara, and i'm one of the partners in 4 Leaf Clover. Someone found us on this forum and contacted us, which is how I found you.

There are a bunch of people asking a bunch of questions about tattooing and piercing in Dubai, and I'd like to take the time to clear up some misconceptions. (I'll be doing the rounds of a few of these posts, so you might read this reply a few times).

1) I don't know if it used to be illegal but it isn't anymore. It IS, however, tightly regulated by the Ministry of Health. Anyone who wants to tattoo or pierce has to be licensed; which is why so many people do it underground (or in their bathrooms).

2) When we opened, we personally went and checked out the places that tattoo and pierce and ONLY refer you to those who are: sterile, hygeinic, and professional.

3) It's true that most tattoo artists in Dubai only do the "permanent makeup" type of tattoos - we've found one who does that and body art tattoos.

So, if you do want to get tattooed or pierced safely and hygenically in Dubai, you can. We've recommended our contacts to dozens of people since we opened, and we haven't had any complaints. On the contrary, everyone is very impressed with the level of hygiene and professionalism.

Wow Lara, thank you very much for your post. Informative and interesting to hear that things have changed, many don't or didn't realise it, including myself, so thank you.

Like all good things illegal, chances are someone is willing to do the work for you… for a price. Ask someone who already has a tattoo or ask someone with art experience. Someone will probably know someone who will do it for you.

Considering the illegality of it though, try to be as careful as possible when it comes to cleanliness. Look for someone who will use rubber gloves, a clean work area and single use needles or, at worst, bleach and an autoclave.

Hi guys,

my first post, just registered to the forum. I would not even think of getting a tattoo in Dubai. I use to get mine abroad when I go on vacation, from professional artists. Fly to Thailand or Singapore for a few AED, there are some great artists with clean studios. The risk here is too high to get tattooed by someone who doesn't give a xxxx about hygiene. Worst case scenario is HIV, so think twice.
