Afghanistan - where women have zero rights Aug 17, 2009
This is appalling:

http://www.allgov.com/ViewNews/Afghan_L ... ands_90816

Needing the political support of Shia men in next week’s election, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai approved a law earlier this year that not only doesn’t exactly legalize marital rape, but does allow husbands to withhold food from wives who refuse their sexual advances. The law caused an international outcry when it was adopted in March but then it faded from the news. However, the law did quietly go into effect July 27. It applies only to the Shia minority, which makes up 10-20% of the population. Despite their small size, Shia men have been courted by Karzai to ensure his re-election on August 20.

Shia husbands are permitted to “withdraw basic maintenance” from their wives for refusing to sleep with them, according to Human Rights Watch. The same law grants men exclusive guardianship of children, requires women to get permission from their husbands to work, and allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying “blood money” to his female victim.

Human Rights Watch’s Asia director, Brad Adams, remarked: “The rights of Afghan women are being ripped up by powerful men who are using women as pawns in maneuvers to gain power. These kinds of barbaric laws were supposed to have been relegated to the past with the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, yet Karzai has revived them and given them his official stamp of approval.”

So much for the lot of women in Afghanistan improving as a result of the invasion. Isn't this a case of one step forward, two steps back?

I think that if the women were in charge of the oil fields and the gas pipelines, their rights would be better protected.

By coincidence, I came across this in the online edition of The Economist this morning:

Why blame Karzai or the Brits It's the political system in that country that presses for such laws to come into being. Let Karzai strengthen his position and the post the elections this law will be annulled. Nothing but an election gimmick!

Yes Karzai has powers, but he's got his limitations too. More so prior to an election.
The Supreme court there is dominated by fundamentalists who have in the past even banned a candidate from contesting cuz he questioned polygamy laws.
And remember when dealing with Afghans you need to be very tactful!
I'm sure this is nothing more than pre poll appeasement.

But seriously it must be nice to be man there eh? :D

After finding them don't be surprized if one day you wake up in the fired tent.
At that day you will understand that women have some rights even in Afghanistan. 8)

It's not about you and your strengh, but mostly about woman's nature.

Let man fear woman when she hateth: for man in his innermost soul is merely evil; woman, however, is mean.

^^^ Bah, what rubbish. It's primitive thinking that women are different from men. You supress and insult a woman and she has every right to fight back...Period! Just like any decent man would.
You know the playing field is pretty even now, and it's well within a woman's right to retaliate if injustice is being done to her. She ain't gonna loose her modesty if she does so.
What makes a women's revenge that much more potent is that she's aware of her physical weakness. So she seeks innovative methods of revenge, which are often more painful and long lasting that an average Joe's pub brawl....which is how a man would sort out his issues.

I strongly disagree that it is appalling........ We should let them live there personal lives as they wish to and as you are a spinster /old maid and so like to let your mouth run away with you then start you ranting about something you will know nothing of married life.
How do you know that these wives are not ecstatic with their married life ?

Everyone was aware of the destruction the Taliban was causing in Afghanistan, yet no one dared intefere. Only after the Americanos decided to do something it's become a talking point.

India has been a victim of terrorist attacks for years, what could they do about it on an international front? Now post 26/11 with America's help for the first time Pakistan has been condemned and made to acknowledge the presence of terrorist elements in their country.
If not for America, India would have to contend talking to walls!

Everyone is aware about the situation in Darfur, yet no one seems to want to do anything bout it...Ok credit to Kuwait and Qatar governments they do host the Darfur summit and all

Likewise the world is aware of the atrocities commited in Georgia by Russia the Russians, but who's gonna do anything bout it?
No one apart from USA!

So yea people were aware about Afghanistan but all they could do was watch......

Good point kid!

Once the Soviets were kicked out of Afghanistan, the US forgot about it till Al Qaeda emerged and hit the US at home.

Saddam was the best US partner in the region ( of course after Israel) as long as he was bombing Iran, once the war was over, he was tricked to invade Kuwait and all at a sudden he became a tyrant and cruel to his people.

Same thing goes for Darfur, the world never bothered about the people there till oil was discovered in the area.

The world knows what's been happening in Tibet but there's a lot of stakes with China. So who cares.

And the examples can go on and on................Kashmir, Palestine, Somalia.......

- Don't read American papers and medical jornals before lunch to avoid digestive disorder.

- But We don't have another papers here.

- In this case read nothing.

P.S. By the way in the Gulf News I read only first and second pages with BAD local news about some rapes, homicides, ransoms and frauds in the UAE. I always wander why all those stuff happens presumably in Sharjah, Ajman and even RAK but very rarely in Dubai or Abhu Dhabi. :)
