| Anytime Freza, ur welcome, do u know a place in Dubai where i can get Paan cheers, Jerry |
| freza |
| I think it's Pakistani in origins? What exactly is pan? What are the ingredients? And what is it good for? |
| mraph33 |
| I know what is pot.....is that like pan? |
| freza |
No, not at all. Pan can actually be prepared at some restaurants and it is not illegal. |
| Jeevan |
| PAAN origins from the Indian subcontinent. The paan has a beetle leaf which is coated with slaked lime and other ingredient whose name i have forgotten. add to it bettle nut cut to pieces and chew on it. This is the most basic paan which is famous in rural india. It is a very good digestive , carminative, anti flatulent etc etc. There are many different versions of commercial Paan to suit to your individual taste. Its may contain upto twenty different ingredients ( if i name them it would be diffcult for most people to understand) so lets call them taste enhancing ingredients. People who want to get a kick out of eating Paan add tobacco to it. Paans can have wierd names to it banarasi, eksobis teenso( 120-300 based on the grade of tobacco added to it) calcutta masala etc. Heres a website to one of the most famous Paanwala in mumbai . http://www.paan.com/main.htm was this what u were looking for?? cheers, jerry |
| constantine |
| JERRY you forgot the famous mumbai "ice cream paan"....what a combo...!!! |
| Jeevan |
| lol const, thats what i wondering, i also forgot Maggai lol. and muchads maggai in mumbai is humungous, u have to have two mouthfuls to finish it.  cheers, jerry |
| constantine |
| freza to answer your question more specifically...paan is usually used as a mouth freshener...but it does not have any herbal or good qualities...in fact its a dentists nightmare and i highly DON'T recommend it...unless you wanna taste it for the heck of it... |
| Jeevan |
i would second what const said, but the betel leaf itself has medicinal values http://www.indoindians.com/lifestyle/paan.htm cheers, Jerry |
| constantine |
| jerry you are right about the beetel leaf...but combined with all the nuts/additives/sugary stuff...dang...i only have it once or twice a year...but it does taste great!! and i could easiy get addicted to it... |
| freza |
Thanks a bunch, this is indeed the info that I was looking for. Great job. |
| Jeevan |
| now this discussion has got me wondering do we get Paan in Dubai?? yea if u have tooth problems stay away from it is all i can say it will just lead to a root canal at a date earlier then it would be.  cheers jerry |
| freza |
I actually had paan before, but I didn't even know what it was! I got intrigued by it for sure, not only the taste but the preparation method (it looks like some small ritual). |
| freza |
Jerry, no I don't know of such a place in Dubai, I would actually like to know where I can find it here too. Maybe constantine knows of a place? |
| constantine |
dude fly down to bombay...only 3 hours away   ...i would...lol |
| Jeevan |
const, no time right now  but am planning to take my vacation during the world cup in 2007 will go home relax and watch all the damn matches hehehe. if that doesnt happen maybe fly to carribien for about 10 days but i dont wanna miss the matches. cheers, jerry |
| Eros |
| Actually paan is banned in dubai. Since most people spit out the paan (usually on the corners of walls) and it dirties the place. You can get paan illegally in Bur dubai somehwere. |
| constantine |
| that is a noble thought...my brother is flying all the way from canada to carribeans and he's already got his flights booked...but guess what...all the hotels have almost been booked already...can you believe that!!! |
| Jeevan |
Hi eros, not all types of paan are spit out a few are chewed on for its flavor and then swallowed. the ones with excessive slaked lime and tobacco have to be stip out. cheers jerry |
| Concord |
Thanks that solves a mistery for me. Always wondered what that stuff on the corner of the buidlings or just outside the doorways was (brown nasty looking stuff). |
| Jeevan |
yea i know, me and one of my office mate are planning on it. hes got a friend who stays there so stay wouldnt be a problem  but then i guess tickets would be. lets see orelse home sweet home with your favorite drink and food with a few friends around u nothing like it. cheers, jerry |
| constantine |
| just did that with footie world cup...might just do that with cricket...hmmm...the idea seems more and more appeal by the second... |
| Jeevan |
| If i am not able to make it to mumbai around that time, lets gang up and watch the matches together? what say??. would be a great way to get together as well. cheers, Jerry |
| constantine |
sure mate...no problemo...have a projector...can bring it over...big screen in your own home...wuuhuu!! |
| Jeevan |
| hmm, thats what we used to do back home, and sit in team india kit lol when we lost the finals agnst aust i got myself stoned in grief.:) thats a nice idea would look forward to it :) cheers, Jerry |
| constantine |
stoned ahhh ....so long ago...been out of the country for 8 years so more now... |
| freza |
| I can understand that sugar and tabacco can be bad for the teeth but the other ingredients actually have health benefits. Like clove and cinnamon. But looking at the list of ingredients I can't figure out what most of them are though. |
| constantine |
| lime = corrosive... beetel nut = very bad for tooth chawanbahar = really bad for tooth/mouth kaacha supari= beetel nut soaked i = very bad for tooth meetha supari = beetel but soaked in sugar = very very bad for tooth clove = good cardomom or eliache = good 5 bad and 2 goods so far....the dentist must be smiling   ...he's gonna earn a fat packet...lol...just kidding...this can only lead to worse things if you indulged in it on a weekly basis... |
| freza |
OK, this does make sense. Drinking sugary tea every day and having a paan habit would not be such a good idea after all :) One more question, what is chawanbahar? |
| constantine |
| hmm chawanbahar...how do i describe it...its a brownish powder which is a mix of mint/perhaps cinemmon and it definately is a breath freshener...you've gotta taste it to perhaps understand... |
| fayz |
| But does it really give you a buzz? I heard that is why it is banned in Dubai, because it is a drug, was I mislead? I've seen people selling it on the street for something like 50 fils but I've never tried it. |
| constantine |
| fayz its the ones that have the potent tobacco inside then that gives you the buzz...as it directly gets absorbed into your blood stream...the non tobacco ones are normal...aint nothing illegal inside them...except when people spit...now thats disgusting and thus banned... |
| Jeevan |
add the slaked lime to the tobacco which gives a tingling sensation to your tongue and if you mess up the proportions, loss of sensation and burns as well  cheers, jerry |
| fayz |
| ok you guys have sold me, I'm going to have to try this stuff now. |
| constantine |
| so when do we make this trip to the dark side then? |
| Jeevan |
Include me in this trip  cheers Jerry  |
| constantine |
| u r in...will PM you when we do get our lazy behinds to trail along with our brains... |
| Jeevan |
| i know where we can get it just remembered a real sucker for for paans, and he used to like it strong  . just lemme know when:) cheers, Jerry |
| constantine |

| Jeevan |

| easternjewel |
I have no. of times! the one with.......ermm... "gulkhand" the sweetend paan |
| Jeevan |
Const not a lot of people know about this stuff so we r gonna be the major contributors lol. i guess everyone else is wondering what are we blabbering about. :) |
| Jeevan |
Thats maggai for you   jerry |
| constantine |
| i made it clear that there are more demerits of indulging in this particualr habit than merits...thus i am just an innocent bystander who is showing a "newbie" (fayz/also halpless victim- cos he doesnt know what he is getting himself into)...the joys of biting into this highly "succulent" endevor...hope i made it a bit clearer 8) |
| Jeevan |
dont know if any more people are going to get sucked into this.  jerry |
| constantine |
patience jedi...the force is strong in this thread...there will always be suckas!!... |
| easternjewel |
u bet! this forum has great potential for such distinctive issues!  |
| ^ian^ |
| I wondered what my Taxi driver got out of his little bag the other day while driving. It was too weird looking to be baccy, too odorlous to be hash... It was most definitely from your descriptions paan. |
| constantine |
this issue needs to be addressed...albeit from a distance...and just coz i have too much time on my hands today...everyone shall suffer... |
| Jeevan |
i put my hair on the line ( not that i have any - i shave them off  ) not many people on here know what Paan is  Jerry |
| constantine |
thus distance is of the utmost importance...you never know when you might have to make a fast escape...jerry told you...ian just walked in...hehe... |
| MaaaD |
| hmmm i think i have had it before after a night out in bangalore ... you guys need to help me out ... it had something on it that looked like silver foil .. but the guys assured me it was safe to eat .. i was so wasted i didnt even care that point .. it was sweet, minty and leafy .. i wonder if its the same thing you guys are talking about ... it was actually weird ... i could do without it hehe |
| Jeevan |
| const ian was a coincidence i would say  are their more people out there who have seen a paan or anything resembling a paan, or tasted one?  Jerry |
| Jeevan |
Maad Bingo!! you have had a Paan  Jerry |
| freza |
| Paan party? Cool. But might a paan party eventually turn into a qat (khat) party...? jk |
| Jeevan |
| Freza sorry for my ignorance but is it the Khat in hindi? or does it mean something else? Jerry |
| constantine |
| ok i couldnt resist...i dont think anyone would wanna go to khat after paan...no more from me on this subject as it would take me too darn long to explain what the heck we all been talking about...whew...over and out!! :brushteeth: also children please brush your teeth :brushteeth: |
| Jeevan |
| hey and we are not exactly organising a party :) just going to hang out with const and fayz habibi to give him a taste of paan if anyone else is interested they are more than welcome   Jerry |
| ^ian^ |
| You may as well throw kava into the mix. |
| easternjewel |
| whats a khat ? |
| easternjewel |
or lassi  |
| constantine |
the questions starteth...khat = khatiya = bed |
| freza |
Jerry I don't know if it's called khat in Hindi, I just know it's has several names and spellings including khat. Qat is a leaf from the evergreen plant family which contains narcotic properties (similar to the unprocessed coca leaves). |
| MaaaD |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khat its why the yemenis are so active     |
| easternjewel |
haha khatiya & pan, perfect combo  |
| MaaaD |
AND bed .. thats when it becomes the perfect combo :P |
| constantine |
khat in indian lingo would probably translate as a wicker bed... |
| easternjewel |
yes, this is exactly what I was waiting for, felt tooo lazy to do the search myself  |
| constantine |
| no chance in hell if you've had paan are you gonna jump on my khat  |
| Jeevan |

| MaaaD |
